Training and Certification

Apprenticeship programs for concrete finishers vary across Canada, but generally require a three-year period of on-the-job training, technical training and exams to become a certified Concrete Finisher, known as a journeyperson. The program includes at least 3,600 hours of on-the-job training and two four-week blocks of technical training, and a final certificate exam.

Qualifications for a career in concrete finishing

In most provinces and territories, you must have at least a grade 10 education or equivalent to enter an apprenticeship program. During the program, you learn how to work safely on construction sites while also taking high school or college courses in math, science and drafting. Once you are fully trained, you are awarded a journeyperson certificate and are eligible to write the Interprovincial Exam for an interprovincial Red Seal.
